Y Readers – Nov. Meeting Service Project

Bring your gently loved children’s books for Y Readers to the Nov. General Meeting.

The Palisades Women’s Club is supporting the Y-Readers of Charlotte this Nov. by bringing in gently used or new children’s books to donate to the program.  It is a great time to sort through your home library for gently read books that are not being used anymore.  Or, perhaps to purchase a new copy of favorite children’s book your and the children in your life have enjoyed to allow these children the chance for the same delight.  We will collect all the books you can bring at the PWC General Meeting Nov. 6, 2019.  If you are unable to make the meeting, you can drop them off at the Palisades Country Club where Cindy will collect them through the meeting day.

Y Readers is the YMCA of Greater Charlotte’s nationally recognized literacy program that serves students in grades K-3 who are reading below grade level. The program operates as a six-week summer camp as well as a before/after school program, serving 800 students annually across three school districts. Y Readers combines an innovative curriculum, fun learning environment, and a team of certified teachers and committed volunteers to reverse summer learning loss and close the achievement gap in the hopes of keeping students engaged in learning and motivated to succeed. Every child deserves the chance to thrive.

At the Y, they know that reading proficiently by the end of third grade is a critical milestone in the success of children – one in six children who do not read proficiently by the end of third grade does not graduate from high school on time. The YMCA of Greater Charlotte started Y Readers to address this critical community need by providing high-quality literacy instruction and individualized attention to students who are in jeopardy of slipping through the cracks. Y Readers provides the additional support students need to gain self-confidence and be proficient in reading by the end of third grade.

Since 1999, Y Readers has served over 5,000 students in the greater Charlotte area. In the past three years, nearly 3,000 students were served through summer and before/after school programming, with 98% of after school and 82% of summer participants improving or maintaining their reading level.

Y Readers makes a difference in the lives of families, too – 98% of families report that their wellbeing was enhanced through their child’s participation in the program, and 100% of parents witnessed an increase in their child’s confidence as a result of Y Readers.
